Don't worry, we get asked these all the time:

I've never skated before. Should I be scared?

Not at all. Most of our girls had never been on skates or hadn't rolled since they were children. We will support you all the way.

Why do I have to pay £5?

Roller Derby is a grass-roots sport, which means we are self-run and self-funded. We use the money to contribute to the cost of the venue hire.

I see that you all wear low-rise quads. Am I allowed to skate in my blades / Bauers?

You are welcome to start out on these skates, however, once you have signed your soul to the Derby god, you need to use quads! The refs won't let you near the track without them.

Can I come along to watch before I try it out?

Of course! And that's free. You also don't have to wait for an induction date.

Are my friends and family welcome?

Definitely. Bring them along. We rely on our support network for roles such as selling merchandise and raffle tickets, scorekeeping and jeer-leading at bouts.

Can I just turn up to watch?

It always best to contact us first. We sometimes attend events around the world that mean practise dates may change.

How good is it for my fitness regime?

Incredible! Not only do we benefit from the amazing fitness that skating offers, we also inject a variety of exercises into the practises and girls often meet outside of these for off-skates training. We have a lot of knowledge on this team too and will make sure you're safe and well stretched.

I am addicted. How do I find out about where to get the best equipment?

We have a wealth of knowledge and advice. Just ask. Or please feel free to register with our forum, where advice for new skater equipment is updated regularly.

Does it have to be really expensive to set up as a Rollergirl?

No. There are frequent ebay gems that we spot and can direct you to budget equipment. The Blitz Dames forums are often filled with these links and are great for starters, as well as occasional star finds which even our veteran skaters would compete in.

Do I have to wear fishnets and have tattoos?

Not at all. Many of girls may have that look but we are a diverse group in terms of age, ethnicity and backgrounds. Our members work or study in industries such as banking, bartending, teaching, law, therapy and art to name just a few. However, once you've worn those fishnets, you'll notice them creeping into your regular wardrobe!

How do you decide on your skate names?

Some of them are influenced by our own names, such as LornaTik, and others based on our own personalities, such as Sleazy Rider! There is an international roster of Derby names that you have to register with so that no two skaters share a name across the world. Check your ideas out here: www.twoevils.org/rollergirls or check out our forum's lounge where there are tips on name choosing, and an unused name bank to get those ideas flowing.
